Does Netflix Actually Sync With Your Tesla? Here's What Really Happens

"Syncs with Netflix" is one of the most common claims in Tesla entertainment apps. Here's what's actually possible, and what TeslaStreams does.

The word "sync" is doing too much work

Netflix doesn't offer a public API that lets outside apps read or change your account, your watch history or your list. So no third-party Tesla app can truly sync with Netflix. When an app says it does, it usually means one of three things: it opens Netflix's own website, it asks for your Netflix password (a bad sign), or it means something else entirely, such as a separate watchlist service.

What our Netflix tile actually does

Tapping Netflix in TeslaStreams opens netflix.com in the car's browser. You sign in on Netflix's own site, with your own account, the same way you would on a laptop. We never see your password, and the video streams straight from Netflix to the car. Nothing is relayed through our servers.

Your progress already follows you

Because you're signed in to Netflix itself, Netflix keeps your place. Start an episode on your TV at home, and your Continue Watching row in the car picks up where you stopped. That's Netflix doing it, not us, and it works the same for the other streaming services in our launcher.

What accounts will add

TeslaStreams accounts aren't open yet. They're built to read a watchlist you keep on Trakt or Simkl, two watch-tracking services that do offer official, disclosed connections. That connection only reads your list; it doesn't write to your history. Where-to-watch info, which shows which service carries a title, isn't available yet either.

What this adds up to

No app can sync your Netflix account into a Tesla, and you don't need one to. Open Netflix's own site, sign in once, and Netflix remembers the rest. Be wary of any app that asks for your Netflix password to "sync" it; our safety checklist covers what else to check.
